tango classes and lessons hampshire

A warm welcome to our classes – we are looking forward to dancing with you.

We will cover everything you need to know about the dancing itself during the classes: this section is about things it would be useful to know before you come. For dancers with some experience, please contact us so we can discuss which class will be most suitable for you. If you are new to Argentine Tango, the following information is for you . . .

Our Introductory Classes are not "drop in" classes. They are part of a 12 - 15 week series, so please check with us beforehand so we can discuss how best to slot you into a programme if it has already started.

Buying Vouchers for your First Four Classes

Tango is such an enormously enjoyable and rewarding dance, we believe it is impossible to judge whether it's right for you based on the experience of just one or two classes. It also requires a certain level of commitment to get started, and we find that "the penny drops" for most people after a few weeks as they start to get the hang of it . We therefore ask you to commit to your first classes by purchasing four vouchers at the special introductory price of £30. These vouchers are valid for two months, so you still have a reasonable time to use them even if you have to miss a class. Thereafter, classes are £8 per person, payable on arrival each time. Please contact us to register and to purchase your vouchers.

Arrival

We suggest you arrive 15 – 20 minutes early on the first evening as there are always a few things to sort out, questions to answer etc. before we can start. You will also need to change your shoes.

On subsequent evenings please arrive early enough to change your shoes and warm up. We play music well beforehand so you can practice last week's steps and 're-engage' with Tango. This means we can start the class on time with everyone warmed up and ready.

Shoes

If you are just starting Tango you probably won’t have dance shoes yet. We can offer you help and advice on choosing the best shoes for Tango, but in the meantime you will need to bring the most appropriate shoes you already have.  You need to be comfortable and safe – there is inevitably a certain amount of feet colliding and toes trodden on in the early days.

Avoid trainers and ‘grippy’ rubber soles as you will need to pivot on the balls of the feet. Also avoid shoes with long pointed toes that will get in the way. The final point is that they should be close fitting so that your feet do not move around in them.

Ladies: best are classic, leather soled shoes, as light as possible but offering you good support.  Many ladies use high heels for dancing Tango.

Men: classic lace up leather shoes will offer you good support, hopefully not too heavy and ‘clumpy’ - wide soles that extend beyond the upper give you little or no'feel' so they are not good.

Having decided which shoes to start in, please wipe and if necessary scrape the soles and heels to ensure they are clean and free from little stones, grit etc. before you come, then bring these shoes to change into at the hall.

Please also read our Shoes page for more information.
